Federal Drug Crimes Defense Lawyer

When drug crimes cross state lines, it is a federal offense that is prosecuted by the United States government. Federal drug laws generally define drug crimes in much the same terms as New Mexico statutes. The biggest difference between state and federal drug laws is typically the classification of drugs and the penalties for the possession and/or trafficking of scheduled substances.

Federal drug laws classify controlled substances—both legal (e.g., prescriptions) and illegal—into five schedules:

Federal Drug CrimesThe amount of a controlled substance may change the federal drug schedule classifications of some drugs. A lawyer experienced in defending drug crimes can help you better understand the charges you face.

The penalties for federal drug crimes are often more severe than those prosecuted at the state level. If convicted, you face a minimum of one year in prison, large fines, supervised probation and a lifetime of trying to explain your criminal record to potential employers.
